New Community Center Project Bulletin:
Members of the Goodwin Community Center and the Parks & Recreation Department are working hard on plans for a new community center facility to replace the
existing Goodwin Community Center located at 130 Broad Street. The GCC building was built more then 100 years ago and donated to the City in 1942. The
Goodwin-Bailey Indoor Pool and Zotto Gymnasium were built in 1950 and 1975, respectively. Despite the outstanding programs offered by the Parks and
Recreation staff, the facilities have long since outlived their usefulness as a modern community center. Budget realities have not permitted appropriate
levels of maintenance and upkeep. Portions of the building are currently closed to the public due to fire code issues. Recognizing this situation and the
economic development benefits a new community center would produce, a group of
dedicated volunteers have been working on a facility plan for the last several years.
The process began with a statistically valid
survey
performed by Leisure Vision from Olathe, Kansas. The
survey results revealed strong community
support for the library, Arrowhead Ski Area, biking/hiking trails, and the community center. Ballard & King Associates a Parks and Recreation
Consulting Firm based in Colorado and Missouri were hired first to determine the feasibility of building a new indoor community recreation center
for Claremont. The Demographic Analysis studied the characteristics of the Claremont area and provided a comparison with basic national standards
as produced by the National Sporting Goods Association. An analysis of the aquatic and recreation service providers in the service area was also
studied. Ballard & King's scope of services provided an identification of the type and size facility necessary to provide the programming the
community said it wanted through the survey. The firm was also involved in developing an Operations Pro Forma that identified operational costs
and the anticipated revenue stream. U.K. Architects from Hanover, New Hampshire and Landscape Architects Saucier & Flynn from Lebanon, New Hampshire
then evaluated several possible sites in the downtown area, including
the present location. The Team of consultants analyzed all the data including the
area's demographics and project operating expenses and revenue for the new facility, which were then compared to similar figures for the current facility. The New Community Center for Claremont, Inc. (N3C) received a 3 million dollar challenge grant from the Claremont Savings Bank which moves the project closer to reality.
In 2008 N3C contracted with Hutter Construction and Warren Street Architects to produce a design build option for the project. The facility will house an eight lane competition pool, a leisure pool, an elevated walking track, a two court gymnasium, a cardio fitness room, an exercise classroom and a community function room.
More complete information on this exciting project is available by contacting Project Chair, Tawnya Coutermanche at 603-542-3072.
