SPECIAL ELECTION TO CONSIDER
AMENDMENTS TO CLAREMONT CITY CHARTER

MUNICIPAL VOTING WILL BE HELD AT:
WARD I & II - CLAREMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL, 107 SOUTH ST
WARD III – DISNARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 160 HANOVER ST
TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2017

POLLS OPEN AT 8:00AM AND CLOSE AT 7:00PM

Charter Amendment #1

Shall the municipality approve the charter amendment reprinted below?  Effective Date July 1, 2017
Section 32. Certain Officers  
For purpose of public safety the fire chief, police chief, and director of public works shall reside in a location within 15 minutes travel time from their respective City office within 180 days after completion of their probationary period.

Summary explanation:  This changes the residency requirement for the fire chief, police chief and director of public works.

Charter Amendment #2
Shall the municipality approve the charter amendment reprinted below?   Effective Date July 1, 2017
Section 36. Municipal Year  
The fiscal and budget year of the city shall begin as set by ordinance.

Summary explanation:  This change clarifies that the City may change its fiscal and budget year by ordinance.

Charter Amendment #3
Shall the municipality approve the charter amendment reprinted below?  Effective Date July 1, 2017
Section 40. Budget Procedure  
The manager shall submit the proposed budget for the next fiscal year to the council not later than 60 days prior to the end of the current fiscal year.

Summary explanation:  This aligns the budget submission date with the fiscal year.

Charter Amendment #4
Shall the municipality approve the charter amendment reprinted below?  Effective Date July 1, 2017
Section 42. Date of Final Adoption  
The budget for the next fiscal year shall be finally adopted not later than the last day of the 12th month of the current fiscal year.

Summary explanation:  This requires the budget to be adopted prior to the start of the fiscal year.

Voter Registrations and Elections

Registering to vote allows you to participate in the local, school, state and federal election process. The City of Claremont has three voting wards and the polls are open from 8:00AM to 7:00PM on Election Day.

VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION

WHERE AND WHEN DO I REGISTER TO VOTE?

  • In person at the City Clerk’s Office, 58 Opera House Square, Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:30pm & 1:30pm-5:00, up to 10 days prior to an election.
  • In person at a session of the Supervisors of the Checklist. Meeting information is posted in the newspaper prior to the session
  • In person at the polling place on Election Day, 8:00am-7:00pm.
  • Absentee registration is allowed for residents who are temporarily absent from the City (such as college student or overseas citizens) and residents who are physically disabled and unable to appear in person. Please contact the Clerk’s Office at 603-542-7003 for further information.

WHAT DOCUMENTATION DO I NEED FOR VOTER REGISTRATION?

  • To Register to Vote, you must prove your identity/age, citizenship and residency. The following documents can be used for proof

TO PROVE IDENTITY/AGE:

  • Driver’s License
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Government issued photo identification
  • Qualified voter affidavit

TO PROVE CITIZENSHIP:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Naturalization papers
  • Qualified voter affidavit

TO PROVE RESIDENCY:

  • Driver’s License with Claremont address printed on the front
  • Vehicle Registration
  • Current dated Rent Receipt, pay stub, utility bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Domicile Affidavit

The City of Claremont is divided into three wards. To determine which ward you are in please refer to the Street Index

  • Ward 1: Claremont Middle School – 107 South Street
  • Ward 2: Claremont Middle School – 107 South Street
  • Ward 3: Disnard Elementary School – 160 Hanover Street
