When is a permit not required for a deck?
Decks not exceeding 200 square feet in area, that are not more than 30 inches above grade at any point, are not attached to a dwelling and do not serve the exit door required by Section R311 of the IRC (Required egress door).

When a permit is required for a deck you will need to:
- check with zoning to verify it will meet setback requirements
- fill out a permit application
